Gateway
What is a gateway?
A gateway is hardware or software that establishes a connection between two different systems. The term originates from computer science and information and communication technology. Gateways act as converters or intermediaries. They enable communication between incompatible systems. Such systems can be networks that use different network protocols. The gateway’s task is to interpret both protocols and convert them into a different network protocol.
Gateways can be dedicated networks, individual computers or specialized hardware and software. A classic example is a DSL router or network switch that connects the Internet to a LAN network. In addition, gateways can be used to connect mobile networks with different architectures.
