Edge Computing

What is edge computing?

Edge computing is a decentralized IT architecture in which data processing does not take place in central data centers or the cloud but directly at the source of data generation – that is, at the ‘edge’ of the network. This enables faster processing, reduces latency and minimizes data traffic over central networks.

How edge computing works

In edge computing, local devices – known as edge nodes, edge servers or IoT devices – handle the data processing. Only relevant or pre-processed data is subsequently sent to central systems or the cloud. This improves response times and reduces the load on networks.

Areas of application

Examples of areas where edge computing is used include

  • Industry 4.0: Real-time monitoring of machines and facilities
  • Autonomous driving: Processing of sensor data directly in the vehicle
  • Smart cities: Traffic control and environmental monitoring
  • Healthcare: Analysis of medical data close to the patient
  • Telecommunications: Support for 5G networks through decentralized computing power

Advantages of edge computing

Edge computing offers various advantages:

  • Lower latency: Data is processed locally, enabling real-time applications.
  • Reduced bandwidth consumption: Less data needs to be sent over central networks.
  • Enhanced security: Sensitive data can remain on-site and does not need to be transferred to the cloud.
  • Greater reliability: Decentralized processing ensures independence from central data centers.

Edge computing is becoming increasingly important, particularly with the spread of IoT, 5G and AI, as many applications rely on fast and efficient data processing.

Digital Sovereignty: The Foundation Decides – Part 2 of 3

In the first part of our blog series, we showed that digital sovereignty is not a political vision but a business fundamental. Yet sovereignty starts with the foundation. Data centers, cloud and IT infrastructure determine whether control is truly real. Three questions get to the heart of it: Where is the data physically located? Who operates the systems? And under which jurisdiction does this happen? Anyone who cannot answer these questions is building their digitalization on foreign ground.

Digital Sovereignty: Independence Becomes the Foundation of Business – Part 1 of 3

For a long time, digital sovereignty was a term reserved for strategy papers and empty rhetoric. That has changed. Geopolitical tensions, new regulations, and growing dependence on a handful of providers have turned a political buzzword into a tangible business issue. Anyone making decisions today about the cloud, data, IT architecture, or IT security is also making decisions about control, freedom of action, and future viability. It’s high time to turn this topic on its head: What does digital sovereignty really mean – and what does it mean specifically for your company?

Stay safe this summer with security awareness

In many companies, the summer months are considered a quiet period. Employees are on vacation, key contacts are hard to reach and temporary arrangements replace standard procedures. Cybercriminals know exactly that – and exploit it deliberately. Firewalls, Zero Trust, endpoint security – none of that helps much if a single employee clicks on a phishing email. People are the most effective target. They can’t be patched. And they’re particularly vulnerable in the summer.
