File sharing
What is file sharing?
File sharing (also known as file exchange) is a process in which users transfer digital files from their own computer or storage device to other computers or devices. This is typically done via a computer network or the Internet. File sharing allows users to share files such as documents, images, videos, music, software and more with other users or download them from them.
Types of file sharing
There are various types of file sharing:
- Peer-to-Peer (P2P) File Sharing: In a P2P network, users can exchange files directly between their computers without the need for a central server. Each user can both upload and download files. Well-known P2P file-sharing protocols include BitTorrent and eDonkey.
- Cloud-based file sharing: This approach uses cloud storage services where users upload files to a cloud to share them with others. The files are stored on the cloud service provider’s servers and can be downloaded by authorized users via the Internet. Examples of cloud-based file-sharing services include Dropbox, Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive.
- File sharing on local networks: On a local network, users can exchange files directly via a shared network drive. This allows files to be transferred quickly and easily between computers on the same network without requiring an internet connection.
