Disaster Recovery

What is disaster recovery?

Disaster recovery (DR) refers to the measures organizations implement to restore IT systems, data and infrastructure following a serious incident – such as natural disasters, cyberattacks or technical failures – and to resume business operations as quickly as possible.

Key components of a disaster recovery plan

A disaster recovery plan should include the following aspects:

  • Data backup and recovery: Critical data must be regularly reviewed and vulnerabilities identified to prevent data loss.
  • Redundant IT infrastructure: The use of backup servers, data centers or cloud solutions provides protection in the event of a failure.
  • Contingency plans and protocols: Detailed procedures support the rapid restoration of systems and services.
  • Testing and simulation procedures: Regular testing of the DR plan ensures its effectiveness in an emergency.

Disaster recovery strategies

The four best-known disaster recovery strategies are:

  1. Cold site: A cost-effective but slow solution – an alternative data center without pre-installed infrastructure.
  2. Warm site: Pre-installed infrastructure that can be activated quickly when needed.
  3. Hot Site: Fully synchronized, ready-to-use backup environment.
  4. Cloud-based DR: Use of cloud technologies for fast and flexible recovery.

Key metrics in disaster recovery

RTO and RPO play the most important roles in DR:

  • Recovery Time Objective (RTO): Refers to the maximum time within which systems must be restored following a failure.
  • Recovery Point Objective (RPO): Refers to the acceptable data loss threshold, i.e. the amount of data loss a company can sustain in its business operations before significant damage occurs.

Conclusion

An effective disaster recovery plan is crucial for business continuity. Organizations with DR strategies should regularly review, test and adapt them to new threat scenarios in order to remain resilient in the long term.

Digital Sovereignty: The Foundation Decides – Part 2 of 3

In the first part of our blog series, we showed that digital sovereignty is not a political vision but a business fundamental. Yet sovereignty starts with the foundation. Data centers, cloud and IT infrastructure determine whether control is truly real. Three questions get to the heart of it: Where is the data physically located? Who operates the systems? And under which jurisdiction does this happen? Anyone who cannot answer these questions is building their digitalization on foreign ground.

Digital Sovereignty: Independence Becomes the Foundation of Business – Part 1 of 3

For a long time, digital sovereignty was a term reserved for strategy papers and empty rhetoric. That has changed. Geopolitical tensions, new regulations, and growing dependence on a handful of providers have turned a political buzzword into a tangible business issue. Anyone making decisions today about the cloud, data, IT architecture, or IT security is also making decisions about control, freedom of action, and future viability. It’s high time to turn this topic on its head: What does digital sovereignty really mean – and what does it mean specifically for your company?

Stay safe this summer with security awareness

In many companies, the summer months are considered a quiet period. Employees are on vacation, key contacts are hard to reach and temporary arrangements replace standard procedures. Cybercriminals know exactly that – and exploit it deliberately. Firewalls, Zero Trust, endpoint security – none of that helps much if a single employee clicks on a phishing email. People are the most effective target. They can’t be patched. And they’re particularly vulnerable in the summer.
