Big Data
What is big data?
The term is closely linked to the process of datafication and describes data sets that are too complex, too large, too fast-moving or too loosely structured to be analyzed using manual and conventional data processing methods.
- Volume: Big Data refers to huge volumes of data, often measured in terabytes, petabytes, exabytes or even larger orders of magnitude.
- Variety: Big Data can originate from various data sources, such as structured data (e.g. tables in databases), unstructured data (e.g. text, images, videos), semi-structured data (e.g. XML data) and real-time data (e.g. sensor data, social media feeds). It can also consist of structured and unstructured data from internal and external sources.
- Speed: Big data can be generated and captured in real time or near real time. Processing and analysis must also take place at high speed to enable faster and more informed decision-making.
