SASE – more than “just” security for modern networks

From the moat to open terrain

For a long time, IT security was viewed in simple terms: safe on the inside, dangerous on the outside. Firewalls served as the walls, and VPNs were the drawbridges. But this model assumes that there is still a clear “inside” to begin with. In a world of SaaS applications, decentralized workplaces, and mobile devices, this boundary – the classic, clearly defined network perimeter – is increasingly dissolving. The problem: Traditional architectures attempt to meet modern requirements with outdated concepts. Data traffic is awkwardly rerouted, security checks occur in the wrong places, and complexity grows faster than the ability to control it.

SASE: network & security converge

Secure Access Service Edge – SASE for short – addresses this very issue. Instead of treating network and security as separate entities, the approach unites both within a cloud-based architecture. Access is no longer granted via rigid networks, but through identity, context, and policies. In concrete terms, this means users can access applications directly and securely, no matter where they are. Security features such as Zero Trust Network Access, Secure Web Gateway, or Cloud Access Security Broker are no longer standalone components, but part of an integrated system.

Technically, this is made possible by users no longer connecting to the traditional corporate network, but instead to a globally distributed access point provided by a SASE provider. There, all data traffic is inspected and controlled in real time. Access decisions are based on a combination of user identity, device status, and contextual information – fully in line with a zero-trust model. The individual security services are interlinked and operate directly within the data flow, rather than existing in isolation alongside one another. This creates an architecture that does not add security as an afterthought, but integrates it into every access point from the very beginning.

Why do companies need to rethink their approach today?

The driving forces behind SASE are not solely technical in nature. They are organizational. Companies are changing faster than their IT structures. New locations are emerging not only physically but also digitally. Employees, partners, and service providers require access, sometimes without being part of the internal network. Without a fundamental transformation, typical problems arise: high latency, security policies that are difficult to manage, and an increasing attack surface. SASE addresses precisely these issues by reducing complexity while simultaneously restoring control.

Tangible benefits in everyday use

The true value of SASE is evident not only in its architecture but especially in its operation. IT teams benefit from centralized management and consistent policies. Security mechanisms apply regardless of the user’s location. At the same time, performance improves because data is no longer unnecessarily routed through central data centers. For employees, this means more stable connections, less inefficiency, and access that doesn’t feel like a security compromise. For companies, SASE means one thing above all – scalability without exponentially increasing complexity.

Who really benefits from SASE?

Not every company is at the same stage. Organizations with distributed teams, a high proportion of cloud usage, or a rapidly growing IT landscape benefit particularly. Companies looking to modernize their security strategy without building a patchwork of individual solutions will also find a clear approach in SASE. Smaller companies can benefit as well, especially if they rely on cloud-based structures from the start. SASE offers them the opportunity to establish an architecture from the outset that won’t require a laborious transformation later on.

Conclusion

Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) is more than just a trend. SASE is not a short-lived fad, but a response to a fundamental shift in the IT landscape. It does not simply replace existing technologies, but transforms the way we view the interplay between networking and security. Companies that take this step are not only creating a more modern infrastructure – they are laying the foundation for flexibility, security, and growth in an increasingly decentralized digital reality.

Our tip

SASE acknowledges the reality that the traditional corporate perimeter is increasingly disappearing. Applications, users, and data are no longer confined to the central, internal network but are accessible everywhere via cloud services, mobile devices, and distributed work models. Traditional, siloed security and network structures are reaching their limits because they are too rigid and complex to efficiently support this dynamic environment.

DTS SASE combines high-performance site connectivity via Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) with the advanced security mechanisms of the Security Service Edge (SSE). This results in intelligent, high-performance connections and consistent access control based on the zero-trust principle. In addition, it offers centralized management and uniform security policies that apply across the entire enterprise, significantly reducing operational overhead. The result is an integrated platform that not only improves security and performance but also provides enterprises with the flexibility and scalability needed to meet the demands of an increasingly decentralized and cloud-based IT landscape.
